| As
part of the series focusing on Newark’s rebirth after
the riots, and in light of the on-going violence taking
place on the streets of New Jersey's largest city, this
focus group, which includes Newark teens, the police director
of Newark, and the founder and president of the Guardian
Angels, talks candidly about living in a violent society.
The panel explores the never-ending stress of surviving
in neighborhoods plagued by violence, and discusses the
tremendous emotional toll felt by individuals living in
urban areas who are besieged by the threat of violent crime
in their neighborhoods. Further, the panel discusses what
is being done and what is not being done to reverse the
trend of youth violence, particularly in the city of Newark.
Racial tensions are considered, as well as the impact of
gangs and the narcotics trade on creating a culture of violence. |
