In this half-hour documentary entitled, "Newark the
Road Ahead." Emmy Award-winning anchor Steve Adubato
looks at four stories of hope and what they mean to the
future of New Jersey's largest city.
"We wanted to tell four distinct and compelling stories
of people and programs that are making a difference in the
life of Newark, this much talked about but little understood
city," says Mr. Adubato.
Proving
that there is a true sense of community in Newark today,
and a commitment to the revitalization process, Mr. Adubato
visits the North Star Academy, a charter school where school
days are longer and the students are as committed to learning
as the teachers are to teaching; he looks at the New Jersey
Performing Arts Center and the impact it has on the lives
of inner-city youth; he talks with the staff at Episcopal
Community Development, an organization that makes home ownership
a reality for many who thought it was not possible; and
finally, he tours the Ironbound section of Newark, an area
that has remained a stronghold in the Portuguese community
for decades. It is a section of Newark where people are
bound by family ties and a good work ethnic.
Other highlights in the documentary include one-on-one
interviews with; Dr. Clement Price, a history professor
at Rutgers-Newark, Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura;
Mayor Sharpe James; and Steve Adubato, Sr., executive director
of the North Ward Center.
This program features the efforts of those who the mainstream
media consistently ignore, but it is through the efforts
of these dedicated and undeterred "Newarkers"
that the future of this city lies.
"Adubato adds, "For me, doing 'Newark the Road
Ahead' was in large part personal. I was born and raised
in Newark, and I was 10 when the riots tore my city apart.
I have heard every disparaging comment and ugly joke about
this town, but it is the people who balk at this city that
don't know all of the untold stories about Newark and its
possibilities despite all of its problems."
