| Today, there
are more than 86,000 Americans registered with the United
Network for Organ Sharing on transplant waiting lists. This
year, an estimated 6,000 people will die while waiting for
organ transplants. This half-hour program explores the myths
and misconceptions associated with organ donation, as well
as the medical and psychosocial issues around this often-misunderstood
gift of life. The panel comprised of a physician, a representative
from a donor organization, a social worker, and a family
member of a donor address the risks and benefits of organ
and tissue donation, the need for increased outreach to
attract greater numbers of minority donors, religious views
on this medical practice, and fears that prevent potential
donors from signing up.
