| This half-hour program explores the care of children with chronic gastroenterological issues (GI). These children and their families live with host of harsh and often debilitating physical conditions including abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, bleeding from the GI tract, poor weight gain and nutritional problems. A panel of experts considers the diagnosis and treatment of such illnesses as Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis and Celiac disease, among others. The program explores the psychosocial consequences created by these conditions, and offers coping strategies to help the child and family. These strategies include giving the parent and child age-appropriate language to explain his/her condition to friends and family. Effective and open collaboration between the parent and school nurse plays is also critical in ensuring a positive outcome for the student.
