Program

Growing Up Great: The Role of the Father in Early Childhood Education
Show #2213
Original Airdate: 2/14/09

Description

Research studies show a strong relationship between parental involvement and students’ success in school.  But efforts to increase parental involvement in early childhood programs often overlook the importance of fathers and male role models.  On this program, we aim to raise awareness of this issue by highlighting initiatives such as “The Male Club” that are reaching out specifically to fathers or other significant males who can positively influence children's development.

Tape Piece: The program begins with a mini-documentary produced by Laura Jones featuring “The Male Club” which is part of the Newark Preschool Council.  It is a parenting support group for fathers .  We talk with Marcus Woods, who is the coordinator of the group and with fathers who are participating in the Male Club. The group is aimed at getting fathers involved in their child’s life wherever they can, even if they are not living together.
