Caucus: New Jersey with Steve Adubato

Program

Arts in the Family

Description

This Families in Focus special looks at specific arts programs and activities geared toward families through the John Harms Center for the Arts, and the Paper Mill Playhouse. Our in-studio discussion explores how families can foster a love and appreciation of the arts at a time when music and art programs are often being cut back throughout the state and in the schools. We look at how parents can help and/or hinder the development of artistic talent in children and the kinds of commitment that often must be made to help this talent flourish. We'll also talk about the benefits to families who encourage their children's involvement with the arts.

The first half of the program begins with a mini-documentary profiling the Rosenthal Family. Seventeen-year-old Reena Rosenthal is an aspiring musical theater actress who is being mentored by Cathy Roy, Director of Education for the John Harms Center for the Arts. Reena's pursuit of musical theater has resulted in her whole family getting involved with the John Harms Theater. They are her support system. Her parents' efforts in fundraising were not enough to save the theater, which was recently forced to close its doors due to financial pressures.
